Description

Penny A. Weiss, Canon Fodder: Historical Women Political Thinkers (University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press, 2009), xxv + 204 pp. Canon Fodder is an impassioned plea for the inclusion of women political theorists within the canon. Penny A. Weiss strikes a personal note in this collection of essays, lamenting that she, like other women of her generation, was introduced to the discipline of political theory through exclusively male-authored texts. Her goal in writing the book is "to urge inclusion of a broad array of female theorists in the conversations that constitute the history of political ideas" (xiv). Historical women who have written works of political theory, and who have wished to be taken seriously as contributors to political discourse, have been mowed down, like cannon fodder, "variously, ignored, underestimated, plagiarized and ridiculed" (xvi). Following the lead of others such as Hilda Smith and Berenice Carroll, to whom the book is dedicated, Weiss hopes to rectify this situation and to encourage the inclusion of women theorists in the history of political ideas. This is a goal that I can only fully and wholeheartedly endorse. I am less certain that the method adopted in this collection will achieve the intended aim.
